The first vines are believed to have arrived in Argentina in 1541 with the Spanish conquistadors. Argentinas first vineyard was created in the city of Mendoza. The countrys Jesuits and Franciscans were quick to recognize the areas favorable natural conditions for viticulture. A wave of immigration from Europe in the 1820s brought a great deal of specialist knowledge to the country. Winemakers from Old World countries, especially Spain, contributed their own vines as well as their experience. For a New World country, Argentina therefore now has an exceptional range of grape varieties.
Suitable grape varieties, an ideal climate, mineral-rich soils and low rainfall are the natural secrets and crucial factors behind the excellent quality of Argentinean wines. These days, state-of-the-art technology during both vinification and the ageing period at vineyards is combined with the knowledge, experience and passion of Argentine oenologists.
Due to the naturally occurring conditions in Argentina, wine has always been cultivated according to methods that are very close to the idea of organic winegrowing. Guano and green plants are used as fertilizer while the dry, desert-like climate ensures that pest control is largely unnecessary. For this reason, Argentinean vines are among the healthiest in the world.
